Opening day is Oct 1st. here in Bama. It will be our first real hunt with our dog (9 months). He is treeing well but does not hold the tree very long before ranging off looking for another one. Hoping to be able to shoot one out, but lot of leaves. Any suggestions for the first real hunt?

He should tighten up once he realizes what will be coming out of the tree when the season opens. I have never had to do it, but a lot of the cur dog guys will tie their dog at tree. The only time I ever do this is during competition hunts....

[glow=red,2,300]I think he'll start holding to the tree better as he gets some age on him. My Angler dog use to tree then mill around the tree looking for the squirrel for a while and take off hunting for another one. As he matured and I started knocking them down to him then he started to hold the tree alot better.[/glow]

Alabamatrapper you are not to for from me.Im on the Al. Tn. line just north of Huntsville right of off 65.It would be nice to hook up and maybe run our dogs one day.Wheeler Refuge is a dang good place during the weekdays to hunt.theres one other squirrel dog hunter that I know of .I got mine dog from him. Just an offer.

Would love to hook up. We stay pretty stretched out untill the first of the year deer hunting in Winston Co., then we hit the squirrels hard. Give us a shout and we will meet you one day in Decatur.

Will do .the deer hunters around here frown on dogs in the woods.I sure would hate to lose my dog over a deer.I hunt deer also but wont shoot a dog over a deer. These idiots around here think they own the deer and just about all wildlife.Thats why I hunt managed areas.swan creek is the best they dont allow deer hunting .

[glow=red,2,300]You can only run hounds on deer in certain areas of the county around here. Sadly, when driving through these areas, you have to worry more about hitting a hound than a deer. Hunt clubs will run up to 20 or more at once.....[/glow]

Thankfully its not legal here ,but if you like it Im all for it .Hunted with dogs once in the southern part of Al. I didnt like it to much chaois with high powered rifles.I would rather hunt small game with dogs than hunt deer with dogs.My passion is deer hunting and training this dog I have now.Hes mostly training me Kinda learning by failure to see because of leaves.Hes coming along to my standards but still along way to go.Leaves and ticks.
