I like to start a pup on squirrel first and then graduate to coons when the pup is big enough to handle a decent-sized coon. What are your thoughts on this?

I know this is a old thread... but do you have any info on this topic?

My uncle and I have two really good coonhounds. My thinking was after I have the new pup running squirrel really well (after a couple full years) to just run him with the hounds and see if he would just catch on. I don’t want to confuse him any because I mainly want to just run squirrel but hey the more skill the better!

You definitely should wait until the pup is going good on squirrel. We've never had a problem with our feist picking up coon or any other game we wanted to hunt for that matter.

Thanks for the reply! I’m definitely not in a push to put him on coons no need to be because we have coonhounds. I will definitely wait till he his running squirrel hard!
