What is your opinion about shooting .22 around a 5 mo. pup. I have been going out with my pup looking for a squirrel. I have seen a few that she did not see. Should shoot one or wait until she at least sees or trees?

As long as she's socialized to gun fire properly, a .22 should be fine. As far shooting out one's she doesn't tree - BE CAREFUL - you could interfere with her barking while treed. If you just shoot them out without her barking at them, she may just come to expect you to shoot them out without her making a peep. If you need to get fur in her mouth you can do it once or twice but I definitely wouldn't make a habit of it. It all depends on her reaction but it can be a difficult thing to fix. Generally, being patient and giving her more time in the timber will get her going. She's still young.

Today i had a possum in a live trap. I let the pup find it in the cage. Then i dumped it out on the ground and it played dead. She did not want to grab it so i put it on small sapling and it ran to the top. While she was barking at it i shot it out. Then she ran in and grabbed it. I put it back in the tree on a low limb and she talked to him for about thee minutes.I gave lots of praise. I hope i have not made a possum dog. BTW i am not going to eat it ha ha.

I use opossum to train dogs quiet often. You can get em started pretty easy with them and and aren't going to tree very many of them in the day. I actually let my dogs tree anything that will climb. When they got the whole treeing thing down you can always break them from off game
