Well, Chad....
Feist is a "type" of dog like "Bird Dog" or "Hound" is a type of dog...There are breeds within the types.
In some parts of the country, the terms Mountain Feist and Treeing Feist are used interchangeably. So, to those folks there is no difference.
As time goes on, there is becoming a greater difference (or at least recognizing the fact) between Mountain Feist and Treeing Feist, even though they may share some ancestry.
Mountain Feist refers to a dog that has been bred feist to feist for multiple generations. More simply, in a broad sense, a feist that comes from the Appalachian or Ozark Mountains. The preferred ear carriage for many enthusiasts is erect (i.e., "prick eared"). These dogs are largely the product of natural selection and developed local strains due to geographic isolation.
Treeing Feist was initially used as a term for dogs bred outside the mountains, notably the Southeast and Gulf Coast. The ancestors of many of these dogs came from the mountains. However, the "type" of the dogs changed somewhat to fit the local conditions and preferences of the hunters. They accomplished this through selective breeding and introducing considerable outside blood (i.e., bird dog, hound, cur dog and terrier).
Now, these are generalizations. For the past 10-15 years, there has been a great mixing of squirrel dogs (within and across breeds). With the result becoming a 20-40 lb dog used to hunt squirrels. Individuals from the same litter may be registered as different breeds based on physical characteristics. To me, these crossed-up animals are a "type" of dog and not a true breed. They may become a distinct breed one day through selective breeding.
That is why people hunting the "type" of dog I do prefer to refer to their hunting companions as "Mountain Feist". They are what many consider the tried and true squirrel dogs. They reproduce their traits in a manner consistent with a distinct breed. While there are many different lines, they have common traits that bind them into an over-arching, or umbrella breed.
As you can see, this is a complicated issue and everyone has opinions about it. A quick way to make sense of it is to think of a Mountain Feist as being bred feist to feist and a Treeing Feist is bred feist to non-feist or two to three generations linebred from the initial outbreeding.

It should be noted that all "feist" are lumped together in every registry in existence right now under one name or the other....Even if you can get a different name put on your dogs, the breed standard is the same.
For example, there is no official ear carriage. There is so much diversity in appearance of these dogs because they are bred for hunting, not simply to meet a show standard. If they are built to do the job is what's important not how their ears stand or what color they are.

I see, Makes a little more sence now. Thx. I like the looks of Croucher's feist but then again i'm partial to brindle. ;D I used to think Mike's dogs were too little for my personal preference, but he has been doing some outcrosses that may have changed that. Last time I checked, he referred to his dogs as "Treeing Feist". The best thing anyone can do, besides hunt with the stock is to study the pedigrees. A lot of folks consider 3-4 generations of feist to feist breeding as "Mountain Feist". My dogs are on the larger end of feist, being 25-30 lbs in general.

Florida Georgia Line is my favourite country music band. Headliners Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley are those people that can make anyone sing along with them. It's the reason I like to attend their concerts. And - that's surprisingly beatiful - in 2019 they have CAN'T SAY IT AIN'T COUNTRY TOUR which covers all the US cities and towns. For concert info visit Florida Georgia Line Concerts 2020.
